The Literacy SMARTTM Programme Framework

Voted Singapore's Best Literacy Programme, Again

Little Green House takes immense pride in nurturing young minds with our award-winning Literacy SMART™ Programme for children aged 2 months to 6 years. We start our students on their early literacy journey, with a focus on helping children confidently develop their 4 core language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), both in English and Mandarin.

Little Green House aims to equip children with essential and proper knowledge, skills and attitudes for them to become:

  • Active Listeners
  • Passionate Readers
  • Creative Writers
  • Charismatic Speakers

Our Literacy SMART™ Programme is designed around 3 central pillars:

  • The Growing SMART Journey
  • The Blooming SMART Challenges
  • The Nurturing SMART Sanctuary

In addition, our framework has close alignment with the Early Years Development Framework (EYDF)  by the Early Childhood Development Agency and the Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) framework by the Ministry of Education. Through the suite of quality programmes and diverse learning experiences on offer, children will be able to discover and deepen their knowledge of themselves and the world around them, gaining independence and building their strong foundational skills which help them become a confident, well-rounded and happy Literacy SMART™ Kid by age 6.

STAR Whole Language Approach

Our unique learning approach, based on Constructivist Learning Theory, leads students from broad concepts and progressively narrowing their focus, emphasizing literature and text comprehension. It fosters active engagement, critical thinking, and effective reading strategies, promoting a deeper understanding of the material.

STAR Advanced Reading Approach

Our STAR Advanced Reading Approach covers the fundamentals of book handling, left-to-right reading and book-related terms. It bridges spoken and written language, fostering confident, expressive and fluent reading. Our focus is on developing enjoyment, preferences, and skills through cues like phonics, syntax and knowledge of content. We encourage self-assessment and correction, word decoding, vocabulary enrichment, genre exploration, comprehension skills, and personal opinions.

STAR Phonics Approach

Our unique learning approach adopts a bottom-to-up strategy, supporting the Behavior Learning Theory. Starting with specific examples, it gradually builds a broader understanding, employing the Alphabetic principle to enhance literacy and language skills. We use a variety of reading strategies – phonetic awareness, sight-word recognition, contextual and semantic cueing – to provide direct association of sounds to letters!

SMART Thematic Approach

Our SMART Thematic Approach centers on Theme teaching, where a variety of activities are crafted around a central idea. These activities are woven into the entire curriculum over a few days to weeks. Themes often evolve into in-depth projects, driven by children’s questions and interests, fostering engaging and holistic learning experiences.
