Revamped Curriculum for Enhanced Chinese Literacy

The move to revamp Little Green House’s Chinese curriculum has been in the works since early 2019 and is slated for release across all centres in 2020. This move is aimed at accelerating the children’s grasp and command of the Chinese language through an enhanced curriculum that nurtures their Chinese language capabilities holistically. Our curriculum specialists have developed this new curriculum with S.T.E.A.M subjects as its core and infused it with activities and lessons that will certainly pique their curiosity and interest.

Here are the changes to the Chinese curriculum that the children in all Little Green House centres can look forward to in 2020:

1. Organized Learning With Activity Books

Every child from every age group will be provided with an activity book that will make learning Chinese effective, fun and most importantly, organized. It’s designed to provide the child with a visual experience while establishing a robust S.T.E.A.M. foundation.

2. Develop Chinese Literacy Capabilities with Multiple Intelligences

The theory of Multiple Intelligences suggests that human intelligence can be differentiated into eight different modalities:

  1. musical-rhythmic
  2. visual-spatial
  3. verbal-linguistic
  4. logical-mathematical
  5. bodily-kinesthetic
  6. interpersonal
  7. intrapersonal
  8. naturalistic

The general idea behind this theory is that every individual learns and acquires knowledge differently. Hence, our new Chinese curriculum is developed to enable children with different learning styles to learn effectively and efficiently.

3. Structured Daily Learning Schedule

One of the most important changes to the Chinese lesson plan will be the implementation of a structured learning schedule which promises an exciting learning experience for the children. The daily Chinese lesson will be split into four blocks:

a) Tuning in with Music and Movement

Music plays a crucial role in a child’s development, especially in areas of language development. The children will find themselves moving their hips as they dance and sing to popular Chinese children songs and nursery rhymes. Musical instruments will also be used to enable the children to establish rhythm while learning the various intonation rules.

b) S.T.E.A.M.-Based Thematic Curriculum

To make the entire experience even more interesting and exciting for the children, learning will be thematic-based to provide the child with an engaging and effective way to learn the Chinese language and core S.T.E.A.M. subjects at the same time.

c) Cultivate Basic Chinese Capabilities

For this block, the children will discover the art of Chinese calligraphy and learn the correct strokes of writing Chinese characters. They will also learn about the romanization system of Chinese called the ‘HanYu-Pinyin’ to help develop the correct usage of the four tones.

d) Small-Group Learning

Since preschoolers are still in the process of developing their cognitive and social skills, small-group settings provide them with the opportunity for structured interaction with their group peers. This block will provide the children with the stimulus to learn the Chinese language in a wholesome manner and through cooperation with their peers.

Enhanced Chinese Curriculum in 2020

With so much for the children to learn and experience, we are tremendously excited to implement the new Chinese curriculum in 2020. We hope that these new changes and enhancements would nurture the passion and provide a sound foundation of the Chinese language in every child at Little Green House.
